Directions for Importing the Math 110 Master into Your Canvas Shell

Step 1: Set up assignment categories

Before importing the course into your Canvas shell, set up assignment categories in your Canvas course so that quizzes and discussions upload to the correct assignment group in your Canvas gradebook.

Instructions for setting assignment categories:

In the left-hand menu in your Canvas shell, click on Assignments
On the right-hand side of the Assignment page, click + Group
Under Group Name, copy and paste the following: Canvas Exercises/Quizzes & Discussion Boards (Note: you must spell and capitalize the assignment group name exactly so that Canvas recognizes assignments tagged in the Master by this name.)
Add a second group (+ Group), under Group Name, copy and paste the following: Canvas Checkpoint Quizzes (Note: you must spell and capitalize the assignment group name exactly so that Canvas recognizes assignments tagged in the Master by this name.)

You can also add your own assignment groups such as Exams or Final Exam. You can set up additional assignment groups and add assignment group weights later, after you import the course content.

Step 2: Import course content

Download the file with the imscc extension (in the same folder as this READ ME note).
Enter the Canvas course in which you will import the Math 110 Master
Select Settings (typically at the bottom of the left column in your Canvas shell).
From the Course Details tab select Import Course Content (typically in the column on the right).
Select Content Type Canvas Course Export Package.
Source Drag and drop the imscc course you downloaded onto Choose File.
Content Now you have two options, All content (recommended) or Select specific content.
If you choose All content, each assignment automatically imports into the appropriate assignment group in your Canvas gradebook. It is easy to delete the modules you do not want (very easy to do). If you choose Select specific content, you will be able to select only the modules you are interested in and nothing extra will be pulled into your course. But each assignment will be dumped into a newly created assignment category typically named Imported Assignments. You will then need to move each assignment to the appropriate assignment category (a little time consuming).
Click Import.
Wait … wait a little more … and then wait some more … until the job is complete.
If you chose All content, you’re done and can begin working in your course.
If you chose Select specific content, there is more work to do.
- From the Import Content page, click Select Content.
- To see the list of modules, click on the arrow next to Modules. DO NOT click on the box next to Modules because this selects all the modules and sometimes you cannot uncheck them.
- Now check the box for each module you will import (you can come back and repeat the process to import additional modules later). Quizzes and discussion exercises associated with the module will automatically import with the module.
- When you have checked the box for each module you want to import, click Select Content in the lower right corner of the Select Content box.
- The quizzes and discussion exercises will be dumped into a general category called Imported Assignments. You will have to individually move each assignment into the proper assignment category.
If you made a mistake and would like to start over, just Reset Course Content (in Settings). But this will delete everything and reset your course to its original “factory” condition.
